Reading to Write

My Path to Becoming an Author

Defining a Direction

I am still working on the MINIB April Platform Challenge, today I did Day 25 – Ask for an Interview with an expert.  I haven’t heard back yet, but the process is started.  This evening, I’ll work on getting the question ready and, if she says no, I’ll look for another expert tomorrow.  This leaves me with only one day left to do; the guest blogging tasks. I’ll soon be left with only myself to guide my way.  Enough of drifting with the tide.  It’s time to pick a direction and start the journey.

I am actually working on my novel.  I had about 7 chapters in a rough draft that had been languishing for a couple of years.  I’ve dusted it off and started inputting everything into yWriter5.  It is forcing me to a deeper thought process.  When you start breaking each chapter into scenes and each scene into character lists, locations, and goals; it defines the direction of the whole structure.  Instead of simply writing dialogue, exposition, and description, I have begun to consider the framework needed to achieve a cohesive storyline.

Today, I wrote a completely new scene, inspired by the photo prompt at Flashy Fiction.  Check it out, choose a current and see where it takes you.  It led my “WIp” (planning) to become a WIP.

I’m also re-defining the direction of one of my other blogs.  Mamaw’s Homeplace started as a traditional website about a decade ago.  It was meant to be a place for our family to share photos and adventures.  A way to stay in touch with several states between us.  At first, everyone was very enthusiastic and frequently posted photos and comments.  Each one of us had an email address and a user ID.  Many of our friends visited regularly to see our pictures, but it was mostly just for family.

Then mySpace caught the attention of the younger kids.  When Facebook gained ascendancy even the adults left me.  For the past three or four years, I’ve been alone there.  I have to admit, even I let Facebook suck me into it’s ever changing landscape.  Only one daughter still uses her email address.  I tried changing the format to pull people back, but it just hasn’t worked. I don’t want to abandon the domain name though, so I’m simply changing the purpose.  It’s not clearly defined yet, but I spent most of yesterday redesigning the look and feel.  I’ve added topics in accordance with the new goals to my Editorial Calendar.  We’ll see how it works.  Come by and visit.
