Reading to Write

My Path to Becoming an Author

Rest in Peace

In my efforts to expand my writing practice, I’m going to begin working on other prompts.  Friday Fictioneers will always be my goto because it was my first, but I kind of like the idea behind the What the Pegman Saw and decided to try it out.  Here’s the first one:

George crawled through the gap between the rocks, stood up, and turned slowly around.  The creek drifted slowly along.  He listened carefully.  Nothing except the forest.  The soft whisper of branches in the breeze.  The lap of water on the shore.  A quiet splash as a fish jumped after a darting mayfly.  Somewhere in the trees, a squirrel chattered irritably.  Everything was perfect.

Turning back to the crevasse, he reached through and grabbed the rucksack on the other side.  He pulled on the straps and it slid toward him, dragging his daypack along at the same time.  He pulled a folded shovel off the rucksack and scanned the area.  Choosing a fairly level spot, he started to dig.  Three feet down should be enough.  There were plenty of loose rocks around to cover it and this area didn’t really have any large scavengers.  The grave should be safe enough.
