Reading to Write

My Path to Becoming an Author

Change a Life, Change the World?

I am trying to get my groove back.  This week’s prompt for Friday Fictioneers didn’t really inspire me.  Then I read the post of our Fearless Leader, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields, offered as her response to the photo below.  It did inspire me.  Reading the comments on her post proved I wasn’t the only person with the thought.  So, here’s my entry. Probably not a true solution.  Who can know what the result would have been? Perhaps better, perhaps worse.  One commenter mentioned Stephen King’s 1963, which was also ambivalent.

No! I cannot give up.  Weinstein’s work must not be in vain.  I have a responsibility to mankind to do Something.  I smile at Frau Hitler.

“Such a beautiful little boy.  May I hold him?”

She smiles back and hands him to me trustingly. I grasp him tightly, turn, and run away as fast as I can. I cannot kill him, but I can change his life.

A conductor calls “All Aboard.” and I swing onto the train just as it picks up steam to leave the station.  I will find a nice Jewish family to raise him in America.
