Ladybugs

Background for today’s Conversation with a 3 year old.  It has been firmly established by both Damion and Elaina that red ladybugs are good, but orange ones are bad because they bite people.  Someone, somewhere showed Damion that he could use a shoe to kill bugs.  If anyone has objections to the violent connotations of that, I dare you not to slap the next mosquito that lands on your arm.

Today, Elaina is at her Nana’s and Damion is playing by himself.  He brought me his tablet asking me to download a new game for him to play and is wandering around bored while he waits.

Damion:  Mamaw, there’s a bug! An orange ladybug.

Me: Well, leave it alone.  It’ll go away.  (We’ve been inundated with them coming in around the windows and heater vents.)

Damion: (As he runs to get his cowboy boot) No! I have to kill it.

Me:  Why?  It’s not bothering you.  Just leave it.

Damion: It went behind Sissy’s thing.

He starts dragging the Doc McStuffins Workstation from its place in front of the window into the middle of the floor.

Me: What are you doing?  Why can’t you just leave it?  It will go back outside.

Damion: No!  It won’t.  If Sissy comes home and sees it on her thing, she will scream.  I have to kill it.

I melt into suppressed laughter and give up.
